If you’re not happy with the alignment of your teeth, there could be more options than traditional braces. Invisalign aligners have become a popular alternative for many adults and older teenagers who want to straighten their smile or close gaps between teeth.
Ask your dentist for more information about the Invisalign system and to find out if you’re a candidate.
What is Invisalign treatment?
Invisalign clear aligners were developed to be a more discreet and convenient alternative to traditional braces. Instead of fixed brackets and wires, this orthodontic treatment uses removable aligners that fit over the teeth like a mouthguard. These are made from a transparent plastic, which makes them less visible in the mouth.
Other advantages of Invisalign over braces are that you can keep eating your favourite foods and it’s easier to brush and floss your teeth, since the aligners can be taken out when needed. Though it’s recommended that you wear them as much as possible during the day and night to help keep your orthodontic treatment on track.
Who is a good candidate for Invisalign aligners?
Your dentist can tell you if you’re eligible for Invisalign treatment after completing an orthodontic assessment. Generally, Invisalign can treat mild to moderate orthodontic problems such as:
- overbite
- open bite
- gaps in teeth
- crowded teeth
More severe issues such as underbite, crossbite or protruding teeth can sometimes be treated with Invisalign, or your dentist may recommend a different option such as braces or surgery.
How does Invisalign treatment work?
If you decide that Invisalign treatment is right for you, your dentist will take a 3D digital impression of your teeth and use Invisalign software to design a series of custom aligners. These designs are sent to an Invisalign laboratory where your aligners will be made from transparent and comfortable SmartTrack® material.
Your first set of aligners will be fitted by your dentist on your next appointment. Each set of aligners is a slightly different shape and should be worn for several weeks before replacing them to slowly move your teeth into their final position.
While your treatment is in progress, you’ll need to have regular appointments with your dentist so they can monitor your progress, provide your next few sets of aligners and answer any questions you have.
How much does it cost for Invisalign aligners?
Like any other dental or orthodontic treatment, Invisalign cost varies for every individual case. The cost will depend on how many sets of aligners you need, the type of aligners you choose and other factors.
Ask your dentist if they have any payment plans to help make your treatment more affordable.
