Gum disease treatment
Gum disease or periodontal disease is a common oral health issue that affects almost half of Australian adults. In its early stage (gingivitis), it can usually be treated before it causes permanent damage, but more severe gum disease (periodontitis) can lead to serious problems such as receding gums and tooth loss.
Our periodontists in Balmain specialise in treating and preventing gum disease at all stages. We’ll discuss your treatment options and create your personal treatment plan to reverse periodontal disease and in some cases restore lost gum tissue.
Gum grafting and bone grafting
If periodontal disease has led to gum recession, exposure of tooth roots or deterioration of the jaw bone or other structures, our experts may be able to restore this damaged tissue with hard and soft tissue grafting.
These procedures involve the delicate transplanting of tissue to cover the exposed areas. Once healed, the grafted tissue will integrate fully with the existing tissue. You may not be suitable for hard or soft tissue grafting if you have certain medical conditions.
Gum lift
If you feel that your gums are too prominent when you smile, our cosmetic dentists and periodontists offer a range of treatments to make a ‘gummy smile’ more balanced and improve its appearance.
This may include minimally-invasive gum contouring procedures to reshape the gumline or the use of cosmetic injectables to prevent the upper lip from rising too high when you smile. A gum lift may be combined with other treatments as part of a complete smile makeover.
Crown lengthening
A gingivectomy or crown lengthening procedure is the removal of gum tissue and sometimes bone to expose more of the teeth. It may be recommended for cosmetic or functional reasons, such as to improve the balance of a smile, to remove infected gum tissue, or to prepare teeth for veneers or crowns.
Our trained periodontists can in some cases use a soft tissue laser to remove gum tissue painlessly and with a fast healing time.
Peri-implant disease treatment
If gum disease develops around dental implants, this can lead to peri-implantitis. This is an infection that affects the hard and soft tissues around the implant and may cause it to fail.
If peri-implantitis is caught early, it can often be treated with a combination of oral hygiene treatments and antibiotics to clear the infection. If the disease has progressed, we will discuss surgical options to restore and regenerate damaged tissue.
Periodontal disease FAQs
Almost half of Australian adults have some form of periodontal disease. However, the majority of them do not realise they have it. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a bacterial infection of the gums, bones and periodontal ligament (attachment fibres that support the teeth and hold them in the jaw). Periodontal disease is usually painless and silent, until its advanced stages. If left untreated, symptoms can include:
- Persistent bad breath.
- Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth.
- Red, swollen and tender gums.
- Gums that have pulled away from the teeth.
- Loose or separating teeth.
- Pus between the gum and tooth.
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
Our practice is specially set up to treat and prevent symptoms of periodontal disease.
